The challenge we address

Survival is the most dominant human instinct. It’s critical to avoid mortal danger, and deeply woven into our psychology and physiology by the ancient emotion of fear.

When a situation in life reminds us of something we fear, we feel threatened – even if there is no real danger. Consequently, the unconscious mind orchestrates spontaneous evasive action, causing unnecessary distress and inhibiting our ability to explore new possibilities.

Our fears are stored in our unconscious mind as assumptions and beliefs about the potentially catastrophic consequences of a given situation. Based on our personal childhood experiences, these constructs provide reference points for the core fears of death, injury, rejection, loss of autonomy, and being exposed. They form the basis for our perspective and how we think, feel, and act in the moment. Ultimately, they determine our results.

While well-intended, many of the assumptions and beliefs we hold are inaccurate, unnecessary, and prevent us from realising our full potential.

Our approach leverages 25 years of academic research into adult development and thousands of success stories from across the world to help people uncover and overcome the unconscious assumptions and beliefs that hold them back, and develop their ability to make the most of the opportunities they may have avoided in the past due to these fears.

 Step 1: Developing Self-Awareness

The first step is to bring conscious awareness to the specific limiting assumptions and beliefs hidden within your unconscious mind.

We achieve this through a structured process of introspection, leveraging a self-improvement goal as the portal through which we uncover conflicting behaviours, the worries and fears that cause them, and the assumptions and beliefs that underpin those fears.

Below is an example of bringing awareness to limiting assumptions, achieved over the course of three introspection coaching sessions.

 Step 2: Developing Self-Belief

The second step is testing your limiting assumptions and beliefs in the real world, by making behavioural adjustments that provide evidence which invalidates or disproves them.

We do this by crafting a series of experiments that push you beyond the constraints of your unconscious mind and towards your self-improvement goal, while maintaining safety and control over the situation.

Upon observing contradictory evidence, the unconscious mind discards limiting assumptions and beliefs, and stops orchestrating behaviour to avoid the fears they represent.

Below is an example of an experiment undertaken to test and eliminate a limiting assumption, by systematically testing and observing it in a real-world situation.

 Step 3: Mastering Adaptability

The third step is to continue the ongoing process of practising the skills you’ve learned with the help of a coach or the adaptable edge community, to support you and hold you accountable.

Adaptability is the quality of changing with ease in response to external circumstances – first by being conscious of how they affect you and, as a result, becoming more considered rather than reactive in your response to them.

To develop mastery, we use the circumstances of your life to exercise the skills of introspection and integration learned in the first two steps – systematically exploring changes in your personal and professional situation to create new opportunities and confidently embrace new possibilities.
